1. (Increase affordable housing) What would you do to increase the supply of affordable housing now that we no longer have redevelopment?
|
Answer from Bill Harrison:
With the demise of redevelopment departments, I will take the lead as Mayor to ensure we have enough affordable housing to meet the community's need, especially for seniors. Fremont also has 15% inclusionary ordinance that I will continue to work with applicants to deliver affordable housing in our City.
Answer from Aziz Akbari:
Even though we have lost redevelopment funds, there is still space around Fremont that is zoned for residential development. These areas can be used to build affordable housing projects. The funds for these projects will now have to come from the city's general fund. As such, we need to increase our revenue. For that reason, it is imperative that we put to use my plan to strengthen our city's revenue stream so that we can fund affordable housing without burdening our residents with increased amounts of debt. This way, we can pay for the projects that we wish to have while still creating a future in which Fremont and its residents can achieve sustainable prosperity.
