Elected to represent the 14th Assembly District in 2008, Nancy Skinner was first appointed Chair of the Assembly's Natural Resources Committee and currently Chairs the Rules Committee. Nancy served as a Berkeley City Councilmember, authoring the first Styrofoam ban in the US, and an elected member of the East Bay Regional Park District Board. She is a former small business owner and founder of the international association Local Governments for Sustainability. Nancy has extensive background in climate change, as coordinator of the Cities for Climate Protection Campaign and of the 2005 Summit between CEOs, Governor Schwarzenegger and UK Prime Minister Blair, which helped lead to the signing of California's Global Warming Solutions Act. As a legislator, Assemblymember Skinner is known for her E-Fairness bill requiring Amazon and other internet retailers to collect sales tax -- legislation that is expected to bring California up to $500 million in new revenue. Nancy has also authored legislation to increase solar energy, improve the energy efficiency of homes and businesses, make food stamps more accessible to eligible families and expand awareness of the Earned Income Tax Credit--federal dollars that could put needed cash into the households of over 800,000 eligible Californians. Nancy and her staff love her East Bay District and look for every opportunity to honor constituents for their achievements, such as her annual Women of the Year event, and to host programs such as tax preparation assistance, health fairs, recidivism prevention, shoreline clean up and more.
