Sally Lieber served in the California State Assembly from 2002 until 2008, representing the 22nd Assembly District and serving as the Assembly's Speaker pro Tempore, only the third woman to hold this leadership position since 1849.

In the Assembly, Sally worked to increase the educational and economic opportunities for all citizens of California, to improve environmental protection, and to protect public health through toxics reduction. Sally authored key bills to combat human trafficking in California communities. Due to her leadership, California is considered to have one of the most comprehensive state laws regarding human trafficking crimes.

Throughout her career, Sally has worked to improve the health of California's environment and foster sustainability. She authored clean air legislation that is credited with removing 10 tons/day of cancer-causing particulate matter from California's air, secured funding for energy efficient `green' schools throughout the State and led efforts to invest in clean technology. She is proud that her work on environmental protection has been recognized by the Sierra Club and the League of Conservation Voters.

Sally also authored an increase in the State's minimum wage and initiated measures to protect vulnerable seniors, empower people living with disabilities and improve conditions for women in California's prisons.

In 2007, Sally joined with Assemblyman Joel Anderson in authoring legislation to require California's pension funds to divest of billions of dollars in investments linked to oil and defense companies in Iran.

Before her election to the State Assembly, Sally served as a Councilwoman and Mayor of the City of Mountain View where she successfully implemented local tobacco control measures, created new green energy initiatives and worked to recruit many of California's most successful businesses. As a County Commissioner, she worked to reform the County's care of foster and at-risk youth.

She currently serves as an advisor to the San Francisco Bay Restoration Authority, an agency that was created through her legislation, and recently served on Attorney General Kamala Harris' Transition Team working on women's rehabilitation and mental health.
