Women's rights, including reproductive and abortion rights, must be absolutely guaranteed.I unequivocally support the rights of women. The current attempts by Congress and state legislatures to erode these rights, hard-won and well-established, are beyond contempt. As your Congressman, I will stand for full equality for women in educational institutions, the workplace, sports, and the health care system, which must guarantee them full, unhindered reproductive rights. Women should control whether and when they have children. Our government has no right to oversee or question their decisions. I am proud to be rated "100% Pro Choice" by Planned Parenthood of San Diego and Imperial Counties and by the Planned Parenthood Action Fund of the Pacific Northwest. After all, women demand abortions only when they experience unwanted pregnancy. Planned Parenthood helps women prevent pregnancy in the first place. Making abortion illegal, on the other hand, does nothing to prevent pregnancy, denies women their rights, and places government in the role of Big Brother. Interestingly, Belgium provides free abortions and sees only 9 abortions per 100 live births whereas in the U.S., the abortion rate is 28 per 100 live births. Our concern should be to ensure the rights of women, not to control their personal lives and private decisions. |
