Smart Voter Political Philosophy for Edwin "Ed" Chau

Candidate for
Member of the State Assembly; District 49

Education: Education is the key to creating and sustaining long-lasting economic growth. Our teachers, counselors, school nurses, librarians, and school employees are toiling in the front line every single day to make sure that California's students receive the best education possible to compete in the world's economy: they help rebuild our economy from the bottom-up.

As a longtime school board member and a parent, I am proud to have fought side-by-side with our teachers and school workers locally to safeguard education funding, increase test scores, pass a $98 million school bond to help prepare students for college and the workforce, and, despite state budget cuts, we balanced our school budget for 12 straight years without any teacher layoffs.

As Assembly Member, I will fight to fully fund public education in Sacramento to protect our common future.

Jobs & Economy: As our state recovers from the toughest economic crisis since Depression, revitalizing our economy and improving our education system will be my top priority. In order to put California back on track, we must both protect our existing jobs and businesses and invest in education for our youth: the key to long-lasting economic revitalization.

In the San Gabriel Valley, small businesses are a critical part of our local economy. As a small business owner for 17 years, I understand the struggles our community faces on jobs and economic growth.

As Assembly Member, I will work hard to protect existing jobs, invest in incentives to small businesses that create jobs, and make sure that our education funding is protected so we can rebuild our economy from the ground up.

Additionally, I will fight and make sure that those top 1% of income earners and big corporations pay their fair share so we can level the playing field and make California the Golden State once again.

Environment: California is home to world-renowned beaches, mountains, and forests. As we work to rebuild our economy, we must think green and act green to create green jobs, invest in alternative energy, and preserve our natural resources.

As Assembly Member, I will fight to protect our environment, conserve our vital resources, and build a sustainable community for ourselves and for generations to come.

Consumer Rights: As a lawyer, I have been fighting for fairness and equality for everyday Californians in consumer protection, personal injury, immigration, and landlord-tenant disputes. As an Assembly Member, I will stand up for the most vulnerable Californians and be their voice in Sacramento.

Public Safety: Our law enforcement officers risk their lives and work tirelessly in keeping our neighborhoods safe and bringing perpetrators of law to justice. As a longtime attorney and Judge Pro Tem, I have worked through our justice system to stand up for justice and fairness for everyday Californians.

As an Assembly Member, I will fight to protect the funding for critically-needed emergency and law enforcement services to make sure the heroes and heroines of our law enforcement agencies have the resources they need to protect our communities and uphold justice.

Public Services: Our state and local governments provide many critically-needed services to help those most in need. In doing so, these public workers: from emergency dispatchers to court employees, and from water engineers to maintenance crews, are the behind-the-scenes workers who make a real difference in providing crucial state and local government services to Californians in all corners of our state.

As Assembly Member, I will stand up for our public employees and make sure that they have the resources they need to serve all Californians.
