Letter from Shirlee

It has been a privilege to serve the people of the Third District these past four years. In that time, we all faced difficulties as a County, and many of us have faced personal losses as well. The recession continues to be a challenge for homeowners, small business people, and the unemployed and underemployed of our County.

Weathering the Hard Times:

We have seen cutbacks in funding for seniors and students, and reforming our County pension plans has forced us to make tough decisions that affect people's jobs and lives. But with the help of our employees and the public, we are addressing these challenges together.

Personally, I have seen changes in my own life with the untimely death of my beloved husband Peter. With the help of many supportive friends, family and colleagues, I have weathered this storm and decided to run for a second term. With your support, and with a shared vision of making Sonoma County an even better place to live for every resident, I have chosen to continue to work toward that goal. .

Going Forward to a Stronger Sonoma County:

We have seen some high points in this cycle. We opened the Family Justice Center in late 2011, and have served hundreds of clients to date. We are expanding our Sonoma County Airport to bring in new business and support our tourism industry. And the SMART train is moving full speed ahead with the approval of a $107 million construction contract, which will provide hundreds of new jobs.

In my next term, I will work to keep the SMART train on track and ready to roll on schedule in 2015. I will continue to be a fiscal steward for the taxpayers of Sonoma County and to watchdog the budget. I will not compromise on the services that are crucial to the most vulnerable of our residents, and I will continue to advocate for protection of our open spaces. I will work with individuals, organizations and businesses toward economic revitalization throughout our County.
