Unfair College FundingBy Scott L. HassonCandidate for Trustee; San Diego Community College District; Trustee Area B | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
The San Diego Community College District only gets 2% of any tuition it collects. 98% goes to Sacramento to be given back to the schools as they see fit. This is a broken system. When our state holds back the money, and college districts across California have to take out loans that taxpayers must repay with interest because of Sacramento's spending problem, our students suffer. Our faculty suffers. Our campuses suffer. Every month the San Diego Community College District has to dip into its' reserve fund to pay all their operating expenses and salaries, until Sacramento decides to send them their proper funding -- a piece of the 98% that they've siphoned. Every month they are at least 60 days behind. This is tragic. Unbelievable!! In essence, the San Diego Community College District -- and other college districts across the state -- are forced to fund the state's General Fund on the backs of our students' tuition and enrollment fees. As a Trustee, I will work with our legislators -- and fight, if necessary -- to ensure our fair share of funding for San Diego's community colleges. |
