Ord in March was assigned to the Band School following eight weeks of Basic Training, and spent the rest of his two year service there during the Korean War. We both were playing in the Monterey County Symphony and continued during the next four years as Joe got his first teaching job in nearby Gonzales High School. We also played and I sang in the Carmel Bach Festival in the summers. 1955-1956 I took my first music job as the instrumental music teacher for the three K-8 schools of North Monterey County District. 1956-1959 Stay-at-home Mother of first two children. Continued performing with Bach Festival and Monterey Symphony, became Board member of Symphony, volunteering in office and also in the Monterey Republican office next door to help reelect President Eisenhower in 1956. 1959 Family moved to Sacramento. Joe was teaching at Las Palmas Jr. High the first year and then at Grant Union High School. We both joined the Sacramento Symphony. I participated in Parent Co-Op Nursery School with the two boys and occasionally did some substituting for instrumental music teachers in both Sacramento Unified School District and Grant District. Our daughter was born in 1961. I was active in the PTA at Donner School when the boys reached school age. In 1964 when Rio Americano was built Joe was selected to head the music department and moved to San Juan Unified Dist. 1965 We bought a home in the Rio Americano area next to Del Dayo Elementary School. The boys were in 3rd and 4th grade. I was active in the Parent Club and volunteered to have a school chorus of 4th, 5th, and 6th graders. I also took our daughter to San Juan's Parent Co-Op Nursery School. 1966 In the Spring, when San Juan received a Federal Grant for its first Title One Program, I was selected to be the Music Specialist at Carmichael Elementary School. It was great fun and a very rewarding experience. I only wished that all the elementary schools could have participated. In 1970 the federal grant was lessened, was being directed mostly at reading aid, and spread to three schools, so I chose to go to Cameron Ranch School and team teach 5th grade ln their new open plan building. I was there nine years, and my choir of 4th, 5th, 6th graders was chosen twice to be the elementary choir to sing in the State Capital Rotunda at the Governor's Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony. 1979 I taught a 3rd-4th combination class my first year at Billy Mitchell School, then a 4th grade class the next three years. When the San Juan Teachers Association negotiated a prep period for elementary school teachers, (in lieu of a raise for all the teachers) which was to be accomplished using certified music, art, and P.E. teachers, I returned to being a music specialist until I retired in 1993. As a member of California Music Educators Association I was elected the General Music Representative to the Golden Empire Section with a duty to set up sessions for elementary classroom teachers and teachers of Music Appreciation, Music History, etc. in higher levels for their Fall and Spring conferences. In the second year of my term Golden Empire Section hosted the State Convention of CMEA. Following that term I was elected to the State Council as General Music Rep which included writing articles for the CMEA Journal as well as setting up those sessions for the State Conventions held in Easter vacation week. The first year it was held in Fresno, but the second year it was at Disneyland and was the entire Western States Convention. As a member of CTA/NEA I attended the San JuanTeachers Association meetings as a building representative many years. In my last ten years I was elected a delegate to the NEA Representative Assembly held each July. I laughingly referred locally to myself as "our token Republican," although there may actually have been a few more, and statewide a survey found that 46% of CTA members were Republicans. I was active in helping to create a Republican Caucus at the NEA RA and was elected co-chair of the Western States Division. I also helped found a Fine Arts Caucus and was elected to the Steering Committee as the Music Rep. I became a member of Republicans of River City before it separated from CRA, and I have been on the board and/or an officer for almost the entire time. |
