Critical issues for Democrats include the environment, healthcare, planning and international behavior.Probably the most critical issue facing the world today, and anyone in leadership positions no matter how small, is escalating climate change. I am a strong supporter of candidates and measures that will in any way reduce our rush toward environmental collapse. This means preserving air and water quality, habitat protection and sound land use planning. I am a proponent of "smart growth" (a platform principle of the California Democratic Party) which supports development that does not lead to urban sprawl, to the undercutting of existing businesses or to environmental degredation. Job growth can coexist with smart growth particularly when those jobs are green, sustainable and locally based. Two other issues that must be dealt with -- if necessarily incrementally -- are health care and America's role in the world. We need single payer national health care so that everyone, of whatever economic status, can live as full and healthy a life as possible. That ours is the only major industrial nation without such a system is a tragedy. Internationally, we must end the terrible waste of lives and resources that is brought about by our nation's interference in parts of the world where we have little legitimate interest and even less undersanding. Our national values, political system and economy may be the best for us, but we have no right to play international bully and impose them on the rest of the world. Obviously, a member of a county political committee can not change these things directly, but such an office holder can and should support efforts to bring about these changes. |
