Strengthening Hayward Neighborhoods ● Worked through our Neighborhood Partnership Program to bring City officials to neighborhood meetings to address problems and concerns and ensure prompt and adequate follow up. ● Worked with Caltrans to minimize impacts of the 880/92 construction ● Strongly supported and participated in our Keep Hayward Clean and Green Program, which sponsors clean-ups in different neighborhoods each month ● Promoted the revitalization of shopping centers such as Fairway Park Shopping Center and helped bring new restaurants to Southland Mall Increasing Public Safety ● Fought for the opening of new police substations in Downtown and South Hayward ● Worked with BART police to increase security at the Downtown station in the wake of shootings there ● Made anti-gang efforts a top priority for Hayward Police, resulting in multiple arrests and decreased gang activity Improving Downtown ● Helped Downtown restaurants and other businesses through tough economic times by promoting small business loans and informational seminars, partnering with building owners along Foothill to give it a facelift, and holding street parties and other Downtown events to attract shoppers and visitors ● Supported the award-winning mural and utility box art program that has saved Hayward thousands of dollars in graffiti removal costs and is now being expanded throughout the city ● Brought families to Downtown with summer movie nights and Light Up the Season ● Promoted the Shop Hayward Program, to encourage Hayward residents to shop in Hayward and stimulate our local economy Protecting Our Environment ● Supported green building regulations for new commercial and residential properties ● Supported the installation of new solar panels and energy saving measures at the City's sewage treatment plant ● Strongly opposed the East Shore Power Plant on Clawiter and helped persuade the California Energy Commission to deny its permit ● Supported legislation to reduce Styrofoam and other plastic material pollution in the Bay Supporting our Children and Youth ● Promoted and volunteered in after-school homework support programs at city libraries and Longwood Elementary School ● Worked with Hayward school officials to address truancy and violent behavior in schools ● Worked with city planners and developers and the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District to ensure adequate playground facilities for kids in existing neighborhoods and new developments ● Helped reduce litter on city streets as part of Keep Hayward Clean and Green Task Force clean-ups |
