We Must Address the Village's Financial IssuesBy Thomas C. "Tom" MuethingCandidate for Council Member; Village of Amberley; District C | |

Amberley Village has been operating at a deficit for a number of years now yet our Village elected officials have done very little to address this critical issue. We can no longer afford to ignore this issue.Amberley Village has been a great place to live and raise a family over many years and the core services (police, fire and maintenance) are what makes the Village distinctive. It was the core services and the opportunity to be close to family that attracted me back to Amberley when my family and I were moving back to the Cincinnati area five years ago. I grew up in Amberley and moved away from the Cincinnati area after college but because my parents lived here, I came back often to visit. However, the Village's elected leaders have lost their focus on what makes the Village distinctive and instead have focused on things like Amberley Green. As a result, the Village faces several major financial issues. The Village now has a large debt burden ($6.2 million) as a result of the decision to purchase Amberley Green and we will need to begin making principal payments against this debt within the next two years. To date, we have only been paying interest. In addition to this obligation, the Village has been operating at a deficit for years and has been living off surpluses built up more than 10 years ago. We were very fortunate that we had this surplus but it is now getting much smaller. Yet our council has not taken any serious steps to address the deficit which will only get larger with the need to service the debt. The Village cannot afford this kind of irresponsible leadership and it is time for a change. We must make some tough decisions over the next couple of years but, if we address the issues whilst remembering what makes the Village distinctive then we will keep Amberley a great place to live. Decisions need to always be based on what is best for Amberley as a whole- something that has not always been the case over recent years. |
