Answer from Joel F. McGuire:

I am a fourth generation member of the Harrison community who has a doctorate-level education, earned prestigious awards for my accomplishments as a professional attorney, and learned and applied leadership and management skills as a U.S. Army Ranger who served in two combat zones. I served for four years on Harrison City Council, and have been Mayor of Harrison for the last four years.

Answer from Matthew D. "Matt" Hiatt:

As a local business owner, I have the willingness, the background, the schedule and most of all the experience to lead the citizens of Harrison. With my business skills and experience, I am in touch with what's moving and growing. We need to keep active and maintain the vision and direction that can help the city stay economical healthy.

Answer from Daniel J. Gieringer:

I have been a local business owner for thirty years. I have thirteen years experience in Harrison City Government, including two terms as Mayor. I am dedicated to the people of this community and have the drive to stay on top of city business.

? 2. What services do you believe should be considered basic and essential for the City?

Answer from Joel F. McGuire:

The traditional services of Public Safety (Fire and Police) and Public Works (Streets, Water, Wastewater) are the basic and necessary services that consume a large majority of our budget, but they're not sufficient alone for proper functioning of the City of Harrison. To ensure that we can meet increased demands for these traditional services as we grow larger without having to raise taxes, a City Finance department that institutes smart spending practices and efficiency measures is vital, as is a proactive Economic Development program that recruits and retains quality businesses for additional revenue streams. To ensure that we keep our small town feel as we grow larger, having quality recreational activities, parks, and options is vital as well.

Answer from Matthew D. "Matt" Hiatt:

  • Fiscal Responsibly
  • Our public workers are a key to our city. Public Safety-Police and Fire Departments.
  • Street Maintenance

Answer from Daniel J. Gieringer:

Basic and essential services for the City of Harrison include Police,Fire,Streets,Finance,Water and Sewage, These services are vital in any growing community and need to be properly managed to ensure Harrison stays solvent.

? 3. How would you balance the City Budget?

Answer from Joel F. McGuire:

During our nation's worst recession, the City of Harrison has maintained an average yearly surplus of $820,000 a year and had its credit rating upgraded because of: (1) creating an Economic Development Department that has attracted $30 million in business development and redevelopment to create new revenue streams, and (2) instituting smart spending and efficiency measures to make better use of existing funds.

Answer from Daniel J. Gieringer:

If elected , I will oversee the City Budget and work smarter and harder to keep Harrson financially strong. As in the past I will work with City Directors to assure that we are receiving the best results for the money we spend.

Answer from Matthew D. "Matt" Hiatt:

Getting back to the basics, taking care of our needs. Police,Fire and Streets.

? 4. What actions will you take to support clean air?

Answer from Joel F. McGuire:

We're going to consider green technologies for City buildings that help the environment and provide cost savings.

Answer from Daniel J. Gieringer:

I will continue to encourage the use of our city recycling programs. As in my past experiences as Mayor I will work with the directors to decrease energy used in city buildings and purchase vehicles that use cleaner burning fuels ie.,E85 gasoline.
