Biographical Sketch

Goro Mitchell, owns carpet cleaning franchises and runs a community-based nonprofit. Goro is the former Assistant Director of the Southern Center for Studies in Public Policy in Atlanta, where he was employed for more than 10 years. Mitchell has taught Statistics and Sociology at Clark Atlanta University and Morehouse College. He has a Masters in City Planning from Georgia Tech and a Masters in Political Science from Clark Atlanta University.

Mitchell has published peer reviewed chapters on various issues including technology diffusion, employment, municipal budgeting, environmental justice, minority manufacturing, transportation justice, minority representation, quality of life, health and others. He has conducted research for projects funded by the Environmental Protection Agency, CH2M Hill Engineering, Cambridge Systematics, Federal Highway Administration, the Ford Foundation, the City of Atlanta, The Bay Area Air Quality Management District, The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, Santa Clara County, the City of San Jose, First 5 California, the San Francisco Foundation, the East Bay Community Foundations and others.

Mitchell has served on the boards of directors of The Ravenswood Education Foundation, the East Palo Alto Center for Community Media and Incumentor (a business incubation program), Job Train (formerly OICW), the Community Working Group of the Mid-peninsula, and Community Legal Services of East Palo Alto. Goro is a Trustee of the East Palo Alto Sanitary District and a former Member of the East Palo Alto Rent Stabilization Board. He has previously served on the San Mateo County Commission on Aging, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission's, Minority Citizens Advisory Committee and the East Palo Alto Planning Commission. In addition, Goro is affiliated with the African American Leadership Summit, the Coalition for Change, the East Palo Alto Environmental Justice Resource Team on Air Pollution and numerous other formal and informal organizations and initiatives. Goro is a Senior Fellow of the American Leadership Forum and a Fellow of the Wildflowers Institute. In 2007, Mitchell was awarded the Tom Bradley Community Service Distinguished Citizen Award by Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. In his spare time Goro enjoys mountain biking and hiking.
