Terrific Schools

By Alan M. Schwartzman

Candidate for Mayor; City of Benicia

This information is provided by the candidate
Good schools are one of the main reasons why families move to Benicia. While the School District is a separate legal entity and is solely responsible for the operation and maintenance of the schools, it is important for a city to assist where possible and legal to assure a quality education for our children. This includes a good working relationship with the School District. I support the Joint City/School district liaison committee and enjoy an open dialogue with members of the School Board.

Much of what a city can do is safety related. I support the funding of School Resource Officers, the DARE program, early intervention programs, field maintenance, crossing guards, safe routes to school, and I supported making the High School Traffic Signal project a priority.I negotiated the new garbage contract which now includes free garbage for the school district thereby saving tens of thousands of dollars for other school programs. The contract also includes the first recycling program for the schools. I am talking with members of the School Board and others about suggestions I have to increase support for our schools.
