Maintain accreditation and increase enrollment

By Stephanie O'Brien

Candidate for Board Member; Marin Community College District

This information is provided by the candidate
Maintaining the College of Marin's accreditation is essential to preserving the District's level of funding received from the state and community. It is also a measure of the relevance and value of the college's educational offering. Our transfer students must have confidence that their education is of high quality and their certification or transfer units are acceptable to the four year college of their choice.

Some believe declining enrollment is due to the $10-per-unit increase in tuition. Others speculate that COM is losing students to Santa Rosa JC. Whatever the reason, loss of competitiveness or cost, we can and MUST correct this trend.

I will work to increase and stabilize financial support for those in need. I will make certain that our outreach to high schools and the greater community is effective. I will foster scholarship opportunities for disadvantaged students and provide resources and assistance to ease the complex enrollment process. I will also work to make sure our programs stay in alignment with the needs of students and their families as well the job market. Outreach to employers and the business community will help us identify employment trends and specific skills and technology that prospective and current employees need. We can then use this knowledge to address any shortcomings in our educational program.
