Testing has become an end in itself. At some point the idea of periodic checks to verify comprehension was foregone, and teachers and students were subjected to unconscionable hours of testing. Deceleration of testing must be implemented to accommodate sufficient time for critical thinking strategies to be developed.
The art of testing does not compare to the art of teaching. Sensitive, intelligent teachers interacting with students to stimulate and challenge their abilities takes time. The urgency of arriving at a particular point in the curriculum and to be on the same page as your colleague across the hall undermines the practice of critical and analytical thinking. Forced into lessons that prepare students to pass a specific test, too they often opt for "just getting it done". Wisely chosen and limited evaluation devices (tests) will greatly enhance the possibility of a well balanced, thoughtful human being.
