Steve Collett's Ballot StatementBy Steve CollettCandidate for United States Representative; District 36 | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
Included with May 17 ballot informationI am a Certified Public Accountant. I own my own CPA firm and have lived in the district for 30 years. I understand businesses, taxation, and the need for job creating industries. We have too many laws, too many prisoners and spend more on defense than the next 10 largest countries in the world put together. Relentless government growth chokes off prosperity. I support tax reductions of all kinds, for any reason, to restrain government spending. I support foreign policy based on trade and diplomacy, not war. I support identifying and compensating great teachers. I support legislation that treats immigrants with compassion and a path to citizenship, so they can participate in the system, just like our ancestors. I support decriminalization of marijuana for adults. Drug abuse is a serious problem made worse by prohibition. It empowers gangs, terrorists and drug cartels with obscene profits, discriminates against the less affluent and leaves the average citizen with inadequate protection from real crimes. Our war on drugs has caused over 31,000 deaths in Mexico in the last 5 years. Federal prosecution in California for marijuana is a colossal waste. I support protecting the environment and maintaining air and water quality standards that maximize the health of our nation and its people. I support same-sex marriage. Government can't solve every problem. I believe in limited government, equal justice, more liberty and prosperity. I will take your concerns to Washington and will always remember who sent me there.
