I believe that the continual path towards privatization in the form of charter and give-away schools will lead to the distruction of public education in the LAUSD. Charter schools are exclusionary in nature, and benefit a few at the expense of the majority. Education is a right not a privilege. All schools in the LAUSD must provide a quality education for all. Charter schools must provide educational services to special education and English language learners--this is not occurring. Charter schools that continue to violate the rights of special education and English language learners should be shut down. Another example of charter school abuse is the recent 6 charter schools that were caught cheating on state standarized tests. With over 180 charter schools, the LAUSD cannot monitor or provide effective oversight unless an independent oversight committee is created like the bond oversight committee that oversees over 20 billion in bond funds in the LAUSD. If elected, I will call for the creation of an independent oversight committee to provide stronger accountibility of charter schools and a tougher renewal policy for charter schools.
