Property Taxes in Bell are Very HighBy Janice (Leal) BassCandidate for Council Member; City of Bell; Unexpired Term Ending April 2013 | |

Many families are not able to keep up with property taxesMuch as been said about the high property taxes in our city. It must be realized what is included in this bill. There is a separate tax for many different entities: Fire Department, Vector Control (mosquitos), and Los Angeles County are just a few. Although much as been said about employee pensions, few realize that pensions are paid through the Property Tax, and the pensions for our employees are high. A few years ago, a special election was held which provided for an increase from 2 percent to 3 percent. This relates to how the pension is calculated: 3 percent of the highest salary times the number of years' service equals the dollar amount of the pension. This is a nice thing to do, but I do not feel that this can be sustained. If the police department were to be changed to the Sheriff, the pension cost would still have to be paid, thus resulting in no lowering of the property tax. This question will have to be thoroughly discussed in a rational manner and an equitable and financially sound decision needs to be made. |
