Are More Budget Cuts/Belt-Tightening in Store?By Pete PetersonCandidate for Board Member; Conejo Valley Unified School District | |

Tough budgets/tough decisions are still in the future for CVUSD. A collaborative process is necessary to ensure that all stakeholders have a voice in the solution. The recession may be over, but it sure doesn't feel like it. CVUSD's budgets in the next few years are full of uncertainty, and the promise of restoring lost instructional days, lost work days or reductions in hours, etc., will depend on future State revenues. Federal funds will be gladly accepted as long as there are no strings attached that ended up binding our hands. The use of a Budget Advisory Committee has worked well in the past. I want to ensure that all stakeholders in the community are represented by the committee. Any recommendations that come out of this committee will need to be thoroughly analyzed to ensure that there are no unintended consequences that could result from the recommendations. Current programs and co-curricular activities need to be included in a Performance-Based Budget process. We need to make sure that encroachments to the General Fund are kept to a minimum by assessing the true values received by all programs. Doing things as they have been done in the past is not the model to be used in developing budgets anymore. |
