Why I'm Running for State ControllerBy John ChiangCandidate for Controller | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
Nearly every year, the Governor and state legislature fail to adopt a sensible budget on time + harming our schools, public safety, and other vital public services. Taxpayers do not receive timely tax refunds. Small businesses that do business with the state are forced to accept IOUs. Our state's bond rating is jeopardized. As Controller I have worked hard to sound a clear and consistent alarm. We need a budget process that holds the politicians accountable for passing a budget, on time, without excessive borrowing, and without resorting to Enron-style accounting tricks. I have offered concrete legislative reforms to fix the state's budget mess. I have fought to close special interest tax loopholes that rob us of billions in critically needed revenue. And I have used my independent auditing powers to expose over $2 billion in waste, fraud and inefficiency in state government. I am running for re-election as State Controller to continue this vital work + to continue to be your independent fiscal watchdog in Sacramento. |
