Questions & Answers

1. How will you prioritize the budget choices the Legislature must make to align the state’s income and spending, and address the need for fair revenue sources that are sufficient for state and local government services?

The Legislature must shrink the size of State Government. The number of agencies and other regulatory bodies must be reduced. Those employed by the State and municipalities must earn salaries that are in line with the private sector. Taking such steps will reduce spending and decrease the need for the State to stop taking revenues away from counties and cities.

2. What proposals, if any, do you support to fix the budget process? What other types of changes or reforms, if any, do you think are important to make our state government function more effectively?

I plan to work with legislators from both sides of the aisle to come to agreement that is fair to all concerned.

3. Many members of the Legislature say that education is a high priority for the state. Yet fees for public higher education have gone up dramatically and funding has been cut. What is your vision for California’s higher education future, and how do you propose to get there?

Education is an absolute priority. The costs of higher education needs to be more reasonable. Costs can be reigned in by bringing salary and related costs of administators and instructrs in-line with the private sector. An audit should be conducted to examine expenditures and where potential waste occurs that can be eliminated and efficiencies introduced.

4. What other major issues do you think the Legislature must address in 2011? What are your priorities?

- Water for Agriculture
