This information is provided by the candidate |
Occupation and Qualifications: Parent; Teacher; Writer; School Board Member, San Luis Coastal Unified School District (SLCUSD). My two sons attend our district schools. I am on campuses and in classrooms every single day interacting with teachers, students, and parents. I am your eyes, your ears, your voice. Parents talk to me and I advocate for them. Staff and teachers express worry over job security and I voice their concerns. In the three years I have been a school board trustee, there have been no teacher or staff layoffs and no school closures. We have reason to be proud of our schools. The district is dedicated to providing all students with the opportunity to realize their full potential. I insist that all means all. You can count on me to make sure each student reaches his/her educational goal. Our test scores are good and continue to rise. Yet I remain tireless in demanding nothing short of excellence for our children because an excellent school district is not only good for families, it's good for home values, taxpayers, the local economy and the future. A vote for me is a vote for excellent schools. I hold a bachelor's and master's degree in psychology and a doctorate in leadership and human behavior. I was assistant college dean at Earl Warren College, University of California, San Diego and hold lifetime community college teaching and administrative credentials. Prior to moving to the Central Coast in 2003, I was a television screenwriter and executive producer of two television series. This gave me experience in dealing with personnel ranging from talent to Teamsters as well as managing million dollar an episode budgets. Since 2003, I have continued to free lance as a writer but have devoted most of my energy to volunteering in our schools and in the community. I have been on school site councils of three different schools since 2004. I have been a classroom volunteer, booster club president, play director, variety show director, band booster. Since 2007, I have served on the music education committee of SLO Symphony. In 2007, I was appointed by the board to replace Dave Peters and ran unopposed in 2008. The current board has elected me to be their clerk which means I will assume the role of president of the board this December, if re-elected to my seat. I am a lifelong Democrat, a child of union workers (UAW) and a union member myself (Writers Guild Of America) I have received, among others, the endorsement of the San Luis Coastal Teachers Association and the San Luis County Democratic Party Central Committee. |
