Why Am I Running?By Marc DavisCandidate for Board Member; Poway Unified School District | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
Four reasons Marc should be elected.#1 -- I am running to be the parents' voice on the board. I have had two children graduate from High School in PUSD and will have four children in the district during 2010 (1 in elementary school, 1 in middle school and 2 in high school). I have a huge vested interest in seeing PUSD continue to excel and improve. I believe it is important to have a parent's perspective represented in all board decisions. I'll be able to see the daily application of board decisions in the lives of my children first hand. Currently, none of our board members has any children attending schools in our district. #2 -- I am running to share my financial and business expertise to help address the monumental budget problems that we have now and will have in the future. I manage millions of dollars for my clients professionally and have done so for almost 20 years. I've been responsible for budgets as a leader in many organizations. I understand financial markets, contracts, employment rules, pension plans (CalPERS and CalSTRS) and tax issues. I can help our district move towards new ways of handling our financial affairs while continuing to deliver a world-class education for our kids. #3 -- I am running to use my skills in problem solving and negotiations to help navigate the changes that must occur within public education. Public education will be changing in the future, both to address our budget problems and to help our students remain globally competitive. These changes naturally may cause tension and anxiety between the board, administrators, parents, teachers, support staff, students and the community. My 20 years+ experience in business and community service will be helpful in negotiating and resolving these issues and in seeing that all points of view are heard and understood. Most importantly, I'll insure that the best decisions for kids are always made. #4 -- I am running to provide greater transparency, communication and participation for our community stakeholders. As a board trustee, I will be a fiduciary of our community's tax dollars. Each of our citizens has a right to know how our decisions are reached and to see how they have been made in the best interest of our children. This needs to be communicated clearly, regularly and in a timely, web-based manner. Complete transparency is needed in all financial deliberations. This ensures that the true costs and benefits of each part of our budget can be understood by any non-financial person in our community. |
