Future Campus SitesBy Eleanor S. VillarrealCandidate for Trustee; Gavilan Joint Community College District; Trustee Area 1 | |

A bond passed in order to support the need for two future campus sites, one in Morgan Hill and one in Hollister.I look forward to working with the Board of Trustees, the community, the students and Gavilan staff to plan the best campuses in order to meet the needs of students well into the future. Gavilan is 92 years old and began in San Benito County. The beautifully planned Gilroy campus was ready for enrollment in 1967. I was in the first Gilroy graduation class of 1968. The site has expanded over the years and currently some facilties are being upgraded. The campus has proven to be a treasure in South Santa Clara County and continues to serve students from San Benito County. Educational services are also provided in the "Briggs" building in Hollister. This site has been outgrown. Supported by a bond, property has been purchased for a new site for the future in Hollister. Current need is to locate, improve and prepare an interim site in Hollister. A permanent site is planned to begin in approximately 20 years. It is imperative that both the interim and permanent sites are planned for best use for students in this century and beyond. The bond also allowed for purchase of a campus site in Coyote Valley, northwest Morgan Hill. I am excited at the prospect of planning a campus there. Although the property has been purchased at a fairly reasonable cost, there are some opponents of the Coyote Valley location. It will be interesting to tease out all of the issues and concerns and hopefully move forward in the best interest of the college, students, staff and the community at large. |
