Madison has proudly served as Councilmember of District 7 since 2005. Escaping communist Vietnam when she was just four years old, Madison came to the United States with her family in search of better opportunities to learn and grow. She spent much of her childhood working in the fields of California's Central Valley. These experiences led her to an early passion for public service and a commitment to improving the lives of working class families. After she graduated high school, Madison enrolled at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where she received her Bachelor of Arts in History. She went on to obtain her Masters Degree in Social Science from the University of Chicago. Madison returned to California in 2000 to pursue a PhD in Sociology at UC Santa Cruz. In 2002, Madison was elected to the Franklin-McKinley Board of Education becoming the first Vietnamese American woman elected to public office in the State of California. Continuing her commitment to improving the community and ensuring that neighborhoods are safe and secure, Madison ran and was elected to the San Jose City Council in 2005, with over 62% of the vote, becoming the first Vietnamese American elected to the Council. Madison enjoys the privilege of representing nearly 100,000 constituents in Council District 7 and dedicates her time to issues and concerns in the district. In her five years in office, she has helped create over 1,000 local jobs, built over 700 affordable housing units, constructed several new neighborhood parks, and brought more awareness to public safety issues. Madison serves as Chairwoman of the Public Safety, Finance and Strategic Support Committee; Alternate Member of the Rules and Open Government Committee; Member of the Mayor's Gang Prevention Task Force; the City's representative on the Silicon Valley Rapid Transit Policy Advisory Board (BART); and serves as a liaison on the Mobile Home Advisory Commission, Housing and Community Development Committee, Keep San Jose Beautiful Commission, Traffic Appeals Commission, and the San Jose/Santa Clara Water Treatment Plant Advisory Commission. Madison and her husband, Terry Tran, enjoy spending their free time attending community events, reading, and traveling. |
