Positive DevelopmentBy Richard "Tony" ContrattoCandidate for Member, Town Council; Town of Apple Valley | |

Helping the Town to grow in a way that maintains a high quality of life.I believe that the rural history of Apple Valley should be celebrated and always remembered. Apple Valley is growing as a Town and I believe that is a good thing. I know that there are some in Town that still possess an anti-growth sentiment. However, as the Town moves to "provide an inclusive community" and strives to achieve "a better way of life" for its citizens, we must encourage positive development. Many people are sick and tired of the typical California city... traffic, crime, pollution, noise, and gangs fill the streets of your typical suburban city. Many people would cite that as a primary reason that they moved to Apple Valley... to get away from all those problems. In a recent survey done by the Town of Apple Valley, residents were asked what their top concerns and problems were. It's no surprise that traffic and crime were among the top concerns. While this may seem to be a great reason to be anti-growth, if you examine the issue further you will find the true cause is not growth, but that the Town is following the same path of sprawl induced growth as many cities and towns have before it. If we continue on this path, the traffic will indeed grow worse, the crime rates will rise, the pollution will clog our air, and the quality of life will go down. What then is the answer? SMART DEVELOPMENT is the key to maintaining the high standard of living that Apple Valley has been famous for in the high desert, while at the same time accomplishing the goal of becoming an inclusive community. We have to end the typical pattern of sprawl growth and focus on creating a plan that provides us with all the amenities that a top-notch community should enjoy, while providing us with that small town feeling and atmosphere that cannot come from your typical California city. |
