We Need More Cops to Fight the Escalating Rise in Violent CrimeBy Jimmie JohnsonCandidate for Council Member; City of Elk Grove; Council District 4 | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
Records from the California Attorney General's Office show that violent crime has more than tripled in Elk Grove in the past four years (197 incidents in 2006 vs. 608 incidents in 2009), while the population has increased by only 11%. Overall crime in Elk Grove has more than doubled during this time. Despite this dramatic rise in crime, records from the Federal Bureau of Investigations show that Incumbent Gary Davis and the City Council have failed to budget an adequate number of police officers to protect our streets. In California, the average number of police officers per 1000 residents is 1.74 for cities with 100,000 or more residents. However, in Elk Grove, there are only 0.91 police officers per 1000 residents. Elk Grove ranks 51st of the 55 cities in California with 100,000 or more residents in police officer-per-resident ratio + and last in the Central Valley. The staggering rise in violent crime demands better leadership and more police officers on the street. Jimmie Johnson will do both for Elk Grove, demanding an additional 100 police officers to protect our families and neighbors. These additional police officers will reverse the escalating rise of violent crime in our City, and make Elk Grove safe again. |
