MARK TABBERT Newport City Council Running to Broaden the Conversation

Loyal to what Makes Newport Great

Respectful of all We've Been Given

Aware of the Sacredness of Our Surroundings

Fresh Perspective: Current city council members are cut from the same cloth. They see Newport Beach as a city of glass and steel. Cottages, gardens and porches have rights too or were left with wall to wall stucco & tile. Private views and private property both have rights. Development on the Peninsula should be bike and walking centric, not more cars.

Frugal: The cost of the New City Hall, which I petitioned against years ago, has grown from $50 million to a $128 million. The Council used $25mm of scarce cash to initiate the project and has no final funding in place.

Strong Advocate for Open Space: I will be a strong voice for open space who closely questions development. The citizens of Newport Beach voted to preserve Banning Ranch as open space yet the present Council is working closely with Exxon/Mobil and Shell to build the largest, most dense development in recent memory on the Orange County Coast.

Global Issues are by definition local issues. Our generation will be remembered for how we deal with the real world challenges we face, issues like Climate Destabilization, Peak Oil, Species Extinction, Resource Depletion and the like. Science has been politicized nationally. Multi-national corporations have too great a voice. Energy companies and utilities have undermined science, doing all they can to muddy the water with an eye on their investments and not focused on our children's futures. We need to turn to scientists, not to the likes of Keith Olbermann and Bill O'Reilly for education. Change starts at the Grass Roots. Washington follows when the people lead. Newport can be a leader. One final note. There is too much money in Newport Beach politics. It should not cost $100,000 and more to run a campaign! It makes it nearly impossible for a Common Citizen to run. I am not asking for money. I am asking you to talk to your neighbors. Community is destroyed when there is too much focus on the developer's bottom line. Council members say they want to reduce traffic, yet vote to build crowded tracts and expand airports. Thanks for your help. Mark Tabbert
