Why I Am Running For City Council

By Brad Sheridan

Candidate for Council Member; City of Los Alamitos

This information is provided by the candidate
I am running for City Council to rid our city of corruption by the special interests, especially those associated with the trash hauling industry
In May 2010, I learned that the current City Council majority planned to award the new trash hauler contract to Consolidated Disposal Service, despite the fact that they were the 2nd highest bidder of 7 responsible bidders. This trash contract will cost the Los Alamitos taxpayers $6.5 Million more than if the lowest responsible bidder was selected in accordance with the law.

After reviewing city documents regarding past campaign donations to certain members of the City Council majority, I became convinced that the current City Council majority awarded the contract to Consolidated Disposal Service in exchange for thousands of dollars in donations to their election campaigns they received from Consolidated Disposal and special interests within the trash hauling industry. I wasn't going to allow that to happen in my city.

I attended a City Council meeting in June 2010 and spoke about corruption, kickbacks, and the City Council majority's failure to keep their pledge made to the residents of Los Al that they would avoid the appearance of impropriety. I also informed them that their violation of our local ordinance which requires they select the lowest responsible bidder is a misdemeanor and could result in their using our taxpayer dollars to pay for their legal defenses if they are prosecuted by the District Attorney.

Instead of thanking me for my concern for our city and our taxpayers, the City Council majority retaliated against me. They removed me from my volunteer position as Chairperson of the Los Alamitos Traffic Commission where I had served for the past 6 years. They also directed the City Attorney to write a letter to the State Bar Ethics Committee because of my criticism of their actions. The letter was never written because I had done nothing wrong.

It is shameful that our elected officials who violated the public trust would choose to personally and professionally attack a resident who volunteers his time for our city, especially when they get caught with their hands in the cookie jar!

I am running for City Council because someone must stop Los Alamitos from becoming the next City of Bell.
