Adam Smith, the eighteenth-century Scottish moral philosopher, outlined, in his classic work, An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations, three important government functions: national defense, administration of justice (law and order), and the provision of certain public goods (e.g., transportation infrastructure and basic and applied education).
Today our government has far exceeded those functions, and that has happened under both Republican and Democratic administrations.
As a School Board member, I will be responsible for:
- Policymaking: the development of policies and the selection of a superintendent to implement those policies.
- Evaluation: I would be responsible for evaluating the effectiveness of the school district's policies and their implementation.
- The School Budget: The board is responsible for maintaining fiscal integrity.
- Education: The board is responsible for establishing, maintaining and evaluating an education program which will provide the opportunity for every student in the district to receive a quality education.
- Communication: The board is responsible for establishing open, two-way communications with the community and staff and other stakeholders. It is our job to keep them informed and to seek their advice and counsel.
I believe that our school district has, over the years, kept parents in the dark; wasted taxpayer money; and failed to properly educate many of its students, particularly English learners and those who come from poor families. These will be areas I will focus on, in particular, as a board member.
