When the City of Irvine saves water, taxpayers save money.
Water conservation is more than just environmental stewardship. It is a chance for Irvine taxpayers, residents and businesses to save money on their water bill. According to the Irvine Ranch Water District website, Irvine residents spend approximately half of their water usage on landscaping. I propose the City of Irvine and its residents begin to use more low-water-use plants and less turf grass in landscape design along with high-efficiency irrigation technology. These techniques will be optional for residents but mandatory for commercial property owners and City facilities. The lower operational costs over time will save the City, and in turn taxpayers money. Also, City facilities will phase-in waterless urinals which will save thousands of gallons of water per fixture, per year. As more villages are built and more residents move to Irvine, our overall water usage and infrastructure will increase, but it is my goal that our per capita water use decreases. Using simple conservation measures we can all save our water, and our water bill.
