Smart Voter Political Philosophy for Janine (Zimmerman) Hellebrand

Candidate for
Board Member; Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District; 2 Year Short Term

This information is provided by the candidate

I would like to make a difference. I am passionate about education and the well being of children. I believe that several members of our current board have served such lengthy terms that they have become complacent and lack the desire to challenge the school district when necessary. Some current board members believe that what is best for the school district is best for the children. While there may be cases that this is true, it is the children whose best interest must be served. In these difficult financial times, a critical eye for budgets and fiscal integrity is more important than ever. I have become inspired to restore integrity and transparency to our school district.

As a small business owner I understand the importance of living with a budget and fiscal responsibility. I am hard working and assertive. I am a cooperative team player as well as being very straight forward. I have six years of volunteer experience in our children's classrooms and have seen first hand the needs of the students as well as some of the difficulties faced by our teachers.

I would like to restore K-12 continuity to our school district. The current school board chose to disregard not only their own guidelines but also the state mandate. I also plan to address the achievement gap between our schools in wealthy areas and our schools in ethnic and economically challenged areas. Our district has been named as one of The 50 Districts with the Largest Gaps in API Among Ethnic Groups. (California) Disadvantaged schools have overcome low-performance by focusing on solid, research based solutions like more one on one tutoring. In addition, I would like to provide complete transparency in both why decisions are made and how tax payer money is spent.
