Why am I running for re-election?

By Bob Harden

Candidate for Board Member; Garden Grove Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate
Sixteen years ago I didn't like what I saw in my neighborhood schools and rather than just complaining, I decided to try to do something about it. I ran for School Board. Like most people who run for office, I wanted to make a difference.

In my years on the board, we have seen great accomplishments, as Garden Grove has become a national example of excellence. Test scores are consistently rising from year to year. Garden Grove schools have won numerous state and national awards for student achievement.

The current state budget crisis presents a threat to the health of every school district in California, including Garden Grove. Over the next year or two, the board will be faced with a long list of difficult decisions. It may be the most difficult time this district has ever faced. It's the wrong time for a change in leadership.

So, why am I running for office? Because I still want to make a difference. Because I'm energized every year when I see our results. Because I believe my experience on the board during previous tough financial times will be an asset during the current crisis. And because, personally, I just don't feel comfortable walking away when times are tough.

You've elected me to this office four times. You've trusted me to be your representative. That's a responsibility I take seriously, and hopefully I have lived up to your expectations.

In the end the decision lies with you. I'm asking once again for your trust. Hopefully I've earned it.
