Four years ago, the voters put me on Capistrano Unified Board of Education as part of a parents' and taxpayers' upheaval aimed at restoring honesty, integrity, accountability, and conservative fiscal policy to our School District. During the years of my service as Trustee and President of the Board, Capistrano Unified has become the highest performing large District in the State of California. I have shown that I have the experience, the judgment, and the dedication needed for the job. As President of the Board , I have kept cool and endeavored--in the face of some provocation -- to run orderly, civil, and productive meetings. When the differences in our District have been at their most intense, my words have always sought to preserve the groundwork for bringing us all back together. I have demonstrated that I believe in excellence in education and will continue to work with fellow trustees and our new superintendent Dr. Joe Farley to move our District to even higher levels of achievement. Having lived in Latin America, Italy, Belgium, Hungary, and all over the United States, I have respect for all people. My father was a Major General in the U.S. Air Force and a diplomat. Laguna Niguel has been my home for about 15 years; I have also lived in Dana Point. I believe in giving back to the community, and I have been a part -- locally -- of Assistance League, Beta Foster Care, Beverly Sills Guild of the Orange County Center for the Performing Arts, and lately United Way and TAALK child-abuse prevention group. I served seven years on the Board of Catholic Charities in Orange County. Hospice Care and American Heart Association were other past areas of involvement. My husband Bill Evers is a Research Fellow at Stanford University's Hoover Institution and is a former U.S. Assistant Secretary of Education; I have two grown children -- one a schoolteacher, and five grandchildren. I also have two grown step-children, one of whom teaches English to non-native speakers. As the former CEO of a software technology development firm, I worked with the Orange County Auto Dealers Association and auto dealers around the state. Currently, I work for the Orange County Treasurer's Office helping people with special tax problems and helping county leaders work together. I also remain a member of the Screen Actors Guild and Actors' Equity (for stage actors). I have met and talked about education policy with hundreds of South Orange County parents as well as with two U.S. Secretaries of Education, an education-reformer Sacramento Mayor, a California Secretary of Education, the California State Superintendent of Public Instruction, and education ministers from the Middle East and China. I am willing to look everywhere and share experiences with anyone, all in an effort to improve education. |
