Revenue EnhancementBy Alan CohenCandidate for Councilmember; City of Pacific Grove | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
Improving revenue without taxationPacific Grove has three major revenue sources, property tax, transient occupancy tax, and sales tax. With the economy at a lull, the revenue sources for this year will probably fall below prior years. The City must find ways to increase our revenue to support the services it provides. How can we accomplish this? The city must use its assets to the best degree it can without diminishing the character of the town. We have one of the prize golf courses on the peninsula that is affordable to all. We must take full advantage of the new clubhouse. The Bathhouse, at Lovers Point, must be brought on line as it is not producing any income. We must revisit and look at our zoning and business uses for our commercial zones, such as the American Tin Cannery and the top of Forest Avenue. We have to improve our other commercial districts, Central Avenue and the Sunset District. We need to streamline the city's business regulations eliminating unnecessary red tape and making them user friendly. We should revisit "Measure C", motel and hotel restrictions. We have an historical town, we should market this as a destination. Put in place incentives to lure businesses to relocate here and fill the needs of our residents. The need of economic vitality is a must for any municipality, to provide the services and quality of life that the residents have come to expect. |
