Growing up in small-town New England, I have been ever since deeply committed to sustaining and encouraging a sense of community around me. I did this for years as a middle school teacher and I do it now as a member of the Ukiah City Council. I served in the first Peace Corps group to go to Ethiopia in 1962 and my dedication to service dates from that point. I was early on involved in protests against the VietNam war and continued to be somewhat active in national affairs. Upon moving to Ukiah in 2002, and after two years of teaching in a local charter school I retired to serve two years on the County Grand Jury. The next step after that was to run for City Council. I volunteer once a week in a sixth grade classroom reading poetry with them. And I was on the board of a organization that promoted alternative justice, until funding dried up. Concern for young people continues to be a primary concern.
