City Council 1972-1980 (mayor 1974-1978)
I supported and pushed for these projects:
- Arcata Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary. With the help of my fellow council members Wesley Chesbro and Dan Hauser, city staff and HSU professors, we fought the State to create a world-class green sewage treatment solution. I lobbied for the Marsh before the State Water Commission. We had to split the project so the California Coastal Conservancy could fund the building of the marshes with the hope one day the marshes would be part of the vision... and it did happen.
- Arcata's A&MRTS bus system (an HSU partnership)
- Forest Management and Parkland Initiative that allowed the City to acquire public lands. The Community Center was possible because of this initiative.
- Redwood Lodge & playground in Redwood Park for events and youth activities.
- Arcata Economic Development Corporation for home and small business loans.
Private Sector Accomplishments
- Alex Stillman & Associates performs historic preservation work. Current projects include the Fortuna Depot Museum Preservation Plan for the City of Fortuna and, as a subcontractor, the Historical Resources Element for General Plan of Fortuna.
- Restored nine historic homes and commercial buildings, preserving Arcata's unique character instead of bulldozing it.
- Partnered with Humboldt State University to create the HSU Sculpture Courtyard in downtown Arcata as an exhibition space for art students.
- Lobbied statewide in the 1980s for passage of California Main Street legislation, meeting with legislators, speaking at conferences and talking with leaders in cities and counties to explain the legislation's importance.
- Helped form the Arcata Downtown Business Community and later Arcata Main Street in to revitalize a downtown plagued by closed storefronts amid the opening of Eureka's Bayshore Mall.
- Revitalized the Arcata Plaza's Ninth and H Street corner. A vacant lot sat on the Arcata Plaza for more than 20 years. I took a chance and eight businesses and 2 Arcata Stays and 2 renters now populate that space. Successful revitalization allows others to take similar chances. The Ninth and G Street corner recently opened with retail businesses and apartments and the Eighth and G Street corner is currently under redevelopment.
- Provide two tourist accommodations as part of the Arcata Stay network.
