Support Local School Support FoundationIn these days of gigantic government deficits and severe cuts in services, it is heartening to see the Foundation for Pleasant Hill Education (FPHE) rallying to support our community. This recently formed all-volunteer grass roots organization has already disbursed $14,000 in grants to Pleasant Hill public schools, funding purchases of equipment that the Mt. Diablo school district cannot provide. FPHE received the 2009 Mayor's Award for the stunning success of its first year operation. Major reduction in education funding at the state level has forced the school district to cut $30 millions from the 2009 budget; it is estimated that additional cuts of $34 millions will be required next year. It is clear that the ability of our children to become competent citizens and productive members of our communities is critical to our future success. We also see educational quality directly reflected in local property values and home sales. FPHE addresses the basic needs of Pleasant Hill schools without political entanglements involving parcel taxes, teacher pay or union-negotiated pension benefits. This year FPHE launched its "Help Schools Thrive + Give $55!" campaign. The Pleasant Hill Taxpayers Association, which led district-wide opposition to the failed Measure D parcel tax, urges all Pleasant Hill residents to support this most worthy FPHE campaign.
