This information is provided by the candidate

I'm Judge Dan O'Malley (retired) and I am lifelong Contra Costa resident, former Deputy District Attorney and Superior Court Judge who has a proven track record as a career prosecutor and advocate for public safety. I am one of nine children born to former District Attorney and Judge Bill and Claire O'Malley and was raised and educated in Contra Costa County.

Throughout my legal career spanning over 23 years, I have held the positions of:

  • Deputy District Attorney
  • Superior Court Judge and
  • Managing Law Partner

The diversity of my legal experience as a Deputy District Attorney, a Judge and a Managing Law Partner, have provided me with extensive experience on all sides of the law.

For over 13 years, I proudly represented The People of the State of California as a Deputy District Attorney for Contra Costa County. I tried nearly 100 jury trials and had the privilege of prosecuting nearly every type of case -- from driving under the influence to first degree murder. I served as a trial lawyer, supervisor, filing deputy expeditor, and civil attorney.

Throughout my entire legal career, I have been active in promoting education for law enforcement, attorneys and students. I have written the California District Attorney Association Manual, have been an instructor for statewide programs and was a Senior Instructor at the Los Medanos Criminal Justice Training Center (Police Academy). I have also taught law at Diablo Valley, Contra Costa and Los Medanos Colleges and currently instruct at the Californian Police Officers at the Institute of Criminal Investigation in Sacramento, California.

I was elected to Superior Court Judge in Contra Costa in 2000, where I proudly served at both the Pittsburg and Martinez Courthouses and evaluated and supervised thousands of cases, both criminal and civil. Additionally, I was one of nineteen Judges who were appointed to the California Judges Association Ethics Committee in 2005.

Due to the fact that Judges are not allowed to run for any other public office, I resigned from my seat on the Superior Court Bench to enable me to run for the office of your District Attorney.

I have worked extensively with victims of crime throughout my career and strongly believe in treating victims of crime with dignity and respect. My extensive knowledge of the workings of legal system has enabled me to work as a Victims Rights Advocate and provide legal support to victims to ensure their best interests are being served.

Currently, I serve as a Managing Law Partner at a local law firm, which provides me with yet another perspective of the American legal system and upholding the fundamental rights of Americans. My dedication to defending the Constitution has not altered, and I will continue to defend, preserve and uphold these rights in whatever role I hold.

I believe my integrity, honesty and dedication to the County are my strengths, and my extensive experience gained on all sides of the legal profession is of benefit to the role of District Attorney.

I currently reside in Lafayette with my wife, Judge Mary Ann O'Malley, the Presiding Judge Contra Costa County Superior Court, and we have two sons, Jake (age 15) and John (age 13). I spend my spare time volunteering with various community organizations, coaching youth baseball and basketball, and continues his community outreach by speaking to high school students about the perils of crime.

My vision for change in Contra Costa County is supported by both Republicans and Democrats alike. Some of the key endorsers of my vision for change are:

  • Virtually every law enforcement agency in CoCo County
  • CCC Deputy District Attorneys Association
  • Sheriff Warren Rupf (R)
  • Congressman George Miller (D)
  • Joseph Russoniello, Former US Attorney + Northern District of CA (R)
  • Congressman John Garamendi (D)
  • McGregor Scott, Former US Attorney - Eastern District of CA (R)
  • Senator Loni Hancock (D)
  • Gary Yancey, Former District Attorney of Contra Costa (R)
  • Senator Mark Desaulnier (D)
  • John S. Herrington, Former Secretary of Energy (R)
  • Assemblymember Nancy Skinner (D)
  • Richard Rainey, Former Sheriff, Assemblymember and Senator (R)
  • Assemblymember Tom Torlakson (D)

I, Judge Dan O'Malley (ret.), respectfully ask for your vote on November 2.

Thank you.
