NO ON MEASURE U--NO CASINO AT POINT MOLATE

By Eduardo Martinez

Candidate for Council Member; City of Richmond

This information is provided by the candidate
Going with a casino is gambling with our children's future.
As candidate for children and families, I don't think that development of a casino and all that comes with it represents the values that we want communicate to our children. I don't want our children to see gambling as a positive activity. I don't want them to learn that get rich schemes are a viable alternative to work.

I am concerned with the crime that will come with a resort casino--prostitution, money laundering--not at the casino itself, but in nearby communities.

I am very skeptical of the promises of well-paid jobs--the "agreement" being dangled in front of us has no real teeth. Among other problems it hasn't been signed and it contains provisions allowing the casino to give first opportunity for jobs to tribal members. Finally, with respect to pay, the agreement states that tips will be deducted from wages--certainly bringing wages for many below the minimum wage.

I support plans for healthy development of Point Molate which brings new and positive activity to Richmond while providing good jobs to Richmond citizens. But a mega-casino is not the way to go.
