Making Oakley A DestinationBy Bruce ConnelleyCandidate for Council Member; City of Oakley | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
By making Oakley a destination City we would create a much better economic environment for our businesses, residence and the City government.Oakley needs more revenue generating business. Our current local businesses are struggling. It has been difficult to bring in large scale retail due to two facts. One is the down turn in the economy and the other is that our neighboring cities have built a tremendous amount of large scale retail right on our borders. Therefore the question remains, how can we lift our economic vitality. My answer is to make Oakley a destination City. By attracting unique events, activities and businesses to Oakley, it would draw people from around the region that would come here to spend their money. These would be entities that you couldn't find anywhere else locally. We have already been working on bringing professional Bass Tournaments here which has proven to be a boon for local businesses and generated revenue for the City. People come form all over the States to participate in these tournaments. We also have Diamond Hills Health Club with 17 tennis courts that eventually will have professional tennis tournaments. When people come from out of town they need a place to stay like the motels and a place to eat and shop. These activities create more jobs and profits for our local businesses which also equates to more revenue for the City which allows us to provide more services to our residence. |
