By Gordon Wozniak

Candidate for Councilmember; City of Berkeley; District 8

This information is provided by the candidate
To achieve balance with our environment while preserving a high standard of living, Berkeley needs to practice smart growth and find practical ways to reduce our carbon footprint.
The Bay Area is projected to grow from 7.2 million people in 2010 to over 9 million in 2035. In the past three decades, Berkeley has lost population. If new development continues to sprawl and current habitual waste patterns aren't solved, resources will be drained from central cities and climate-changing greenhouse gases will escalate. The unavoidable conclusion is that some of the increased population projected for 2035 needs to be housed in Berkeley. To minimize environment impacts, residential growth should be located near job centers and transportation infrastructure. Since the Downtown area has a net job surplus, additional residents living downtown will enhance its economical vitality and help our local retail establishments and restaurants thrive. Its proximity to an internationally renowned public university as well as the Downtown's cultural and historic assets should attract regional and national visitors.

Berkeley has the potential to be the model green city in the United States. That's why meeting Berkeley's climate action goals should be a priority. I have avidly supported the city's Climate Action Plan by helping the Berkeley Student Cooperatives (BSC) secure matching funds to perform comprehensive energy audits on twenty coop residences and federal grant funds to implement the audit recommendations of a demonstration residence, by implementing recycling and composting programs at 13 Cal fraternities and all 12 sororities, by advocating the City to replace its tired fleet of vehicles with efficient hybrid cards and by continuing to fight for sensible solutions to make substantial progress towards our zero reduction waste goal by 2020. To reduce trash in our campus neighborhoods, I have helped implement joint University-City Game Day cleanups. To reduce the furniture and trash left by students leaving at the end of the spring semester, I helped implement a May Move-Out Program where debris boxes were provided in strategic locations for trash, old furniture, etc.
