Smart Voter Full Biography for Victoria O. Wang

Candidate for
Board Member; San Leandro Unified School District; Trustee Area 2

This information is provided by the candidate

I am Victoria Wang and I run for school board of San Leandro Unified School District. I hold master degree in Education in the US and master degree of Law from China. The reason I run for school board is I have great compassion for our schools and passion for our students. In addition, my biggest concern is the low test scores and poor API. Therefore,I am willing and able to help San Leandro schools by making a change.

I have been a San Leandro resident for 17 years. As a mother of two children who have attended public school in San Leandro and one of them still goes to one school in SL which needs room for improvement, I have been a dedicated parent volunteer. Also, I have served at School Site Council at Roosevelt Elementary School. In 2006, I was appointed as a member to serve Citizen Advisory Committee.

I am also active in community by organizing and planning community events. In the year of 2007, I was one of the founders of Asian Chinese Community Association (ACCA) and was elected as Vice President. Same year, I served as Secretary of Friendship City Committee and interpreter/Translator for the Mayor and San Leandro delegation contains 37 people.

I embraced my love of teaching at SL christian school as a full time teacher. At the same time, I saw diverse needs of our community, a need for San Leandro students to learn another language, especially Mandarin Chinese which the SL schools do not offer, I opened Beida Chinese language school in SL offering classes after school, on weekend as well as summer. The Chinese program has attracted hundreds of families and students since its inception. In Feb of 2007 at the Chinese New Year celebration, over 250 people attended the event even it was pouring on that evening. Many people from outside of San Leandro came to my school and attended many sessions of Open Houses and informational meetings. By opening the Chinese school, I have shown people that San Leandro has good qualities and contribute in making our community welcome and inclusive.

In addition, I am working with San Leandro Chamber of Commerce on developing business plan to attract foreign investors from China.

My goals are:

1) I will use my teaching background, skills, expertise and 1st hand knowledge of bilingual education to improve school API & test scores.

2)I will collaborate with district, teachers and parents to bring all students up-skills and reach their potential, as well as close achievement gap.

3) I will work to make sure all our diverse needs and requirements are met so our students can achieve.

I count on your support!
