Public Safety on our Block

By Jean Quan

Candidate for Mayor; City of Oakland

This information is provided by the candidate
"We need to organize block by block to create real public safety in our neighborhoods."
Accomplishments: For the past 8 years, Jean Quan has been one of the Council's strongest advocates for community-based policing & violence prevention strategies and has been implementing them with residents on the ground for real change.

Jean:

  • Transformed the Hillcrest Motel, M&W Liquors and other problem properties through the Public Nuisance Ordinance, which has now been used city-wide on 465 properties.
  • Authored Measure Y, which assigned an officer to every local beat and reduces crime through violence prevention programs.
  • Worked to save and expand the Neighborhood Services Coordinator program that links community groups with city services, while supporting neighborhood councils.
  • Led the formation of the Sexually Exploited Minors network to decriminalize and give opportunities to young women, and increased initiatives to end Domestic Violence.
  • Improved traffic safety in neighborhoods, established the Wildfire Prevention District, and provided leadership on the regional Earthquake Preparedness Committee.

Plans & Visions: We can turnaround violence and crime in our city and create safety for our families if residents are informed and neighborhoods are organized block by block. We must:

  • Implement & strengthen community-based policing in every neighborhood to build stronger city-neighborhood partnerships and accountability on the ground.
  • Work with all Neighborhood Service Coordinators & Neighorhood Crime Prevention Councils to create strong communities that look out for each other.
  • Focus on the most under-resourced neighborhoods to work with youth organizations, service providers & city residents to support young people and re-entry populations to get the resources they need to access quality education and meaningful employment.
  • Increase CORE disaster preparedness training, funding for seismic retrofitting, city-wide resources and organizing to prepare for earthquakes, fires and emergencies.
