Alameda County, CA November 2, 2010 Election
Smart Voter Full Biography for Liz Figueroa

Candidate for
Supervisor; County of Alameda; Supervisorial District 2

This information is provided by the candidate

Senator Figueroa believes that the best way to serve her community is to reach out and listen.

She put this principle into action when she met a local woman whose personal story led to an important new law to help defend women's rights against the interests of powerful HMO's. That woman was a teacher in then Senator Figueroa's district who was discharged by her hospital less than one day after mastectomy surgery.

Her story prompted Senator Figueroa to write a new law requiring at least a 48-hour hospital stay after such surgeries, which gained national attention against the practice of HMO's allowing "drive-through mastectomies." She has also defended a woman's right to choose and has earned a 100% Pro-Choice voting rating from Planned Parenthood of California.

Liz is proud of her accomplishments, but she knows that in order to build the bright future she envisions for Alameda County, we must strengthen our local economy.

As County Supervisor, she will put her experience to work; recruiting cutting-edge green and bio-technology to our region so residents can get back to work and our economy can thrive again, sustaining critical public safety resources so first responders have the training and the tools they need to ensure our homes and our neighborhoods are safe, and preserving and enhancing healthcare options so families don't have to choose between paying their mortgage or healthcare.

Liz's experience and her record of accomplishments has earned her support from key leaders in our community, including Supervisors Keith Carson, Scott Haggerty and Alice Lai-Bitker, Mayors Bob Wasserman and Dave Smith and the entire City Council of both Fremont and Newark. They have joined her long list of supporters because they know that her proven record of tackling the tough issues in our community is exactly what Alameda County's economy needs.
