  • Creating Quality Jobs & A Prosperous San Leandro

We have many opportunities, but I've heard loud and clear from the business leaders across San Leandro that our city must do more to support their growth and success, and ensure San Leandro is a vibrant business location. We must dedicate ourselves to supporting the local businesses which support us. We must create an environment where our local small businesses can thrive.

I will starting by eliminating the business license fees for two years on new small businesses, and re-focus our business development on actively reaching out to attract new businesses and retain successful businesses already here. I will use my experience as an attorney and business owner to attract new grocery stores and restaurants to San Leandro, creating jobs and providing increased funding for police officers, our senior center, libraries, and pools.

  • Protecting your Safety

I am committed to bringing our police force up to full strength by balancing our budget, growing our business base, and working to reform our pension system. But it requires more than just more police officers, I will work with our police department to implement innovative, proven community policing strategies.

I will promote collaborative efforts between our police and our schools to deter gang recruitment and criminal activity. Since only a third of those arrested for crimes in San Leandro are residents, we must work more regionally to combat crime and our officers must work more closely with neighboring police departments.

  • Protecting your Pocketbook

San Leandro has incredible opportunities, but we must not let them slip away. The City has racked up $24 million in deficit spending in four years and reserves are critically low, according to the City Manager himself. The City is living beyond its means. As Mayor, I will restore fiscal discipline to City Hall.

We need leadership that is willing and able to solve our problems. I will enact real change, streamline administration, and control overtime. City employees work hard and deserve our respect, but they will have to start to contribute to the annual cost of their pensions. This alone would eliminate our deficit and avoid all layoffs of police or firefighters, and city employees would still get the same generous pensions when they retire.

Because leadership is by example I promise to not take a salary until the budget is balanced.

  • Protecting your Health

Safe, high-quality medical care is critical to every community and even minutes count in emergencies. The importance of keeping our Hospital and its emergency room open cannot be overstated. I will fight to keep San Leandro Hospital open.

With San Leandro Kaiser under construction, we have the opportunity to make our city into a hub for high quality medical care. As Mayor, I would build on the fundamental advantage of our existing medical facilities, rather than give up on it.

I am an active member of the Coalition to Save San Leandro Hospital, have written letters, Op-Eds, and spoken at town hall and city council meetings in support.

Because of my work to keep San Leandro Hospital open, I have been endorsed by Eden Township Director Carole Rogers and many physicians and nurses at San Leandro hospital, including Dr. Miles Adler, former Chief of Staff, and R.N.s Roxann Lewis and Lisa LaFave.

  • Partnering with our Schools

I have a history of successfully solving problems in our community. As a school board trustee, I proposed the 9th Grade Campus as the solution to the critical overcrowding at San Leandro High School. Working with parents and teachers, I was at the forefront of the campaign to pass the $109 million Measure B bond which provided the funds to construct the school. This August, the school opened on time and under budget. I served my full, four year term as a school board trustee. Each year, the school district's $70 million general fund was balanced.

My wife, a former San Leandro public school teacher, and I are raising and educating our daughters in San Leandro at our local elementary school, Roosevelt.

I will collaborate with both school districts, providing financial support of student programs from a balanced budget.

  • A Child and Family-Friendly City

I opposed the City's elimination of school crossing guards before the vote was made, and successfully advocated for the restoration of the program. I also advocated for the continued operation of Farrelly Pool when it was threatened with closure. As mayor, I will ensure that our city helps our diverse families raise their children in a healthy environment.

  • Protecting your Quality of Life

Our pools, libraries, senior center & other community services are a huge part of our lives and communities. As Mayor, I will prioritize the quality of life services which bring our communities together, while ensuring a balanced budget. And I will open the new senior center.

  • Local Support, Local Concerns

I am running a grassroots campaign with an entirely volunteer staff. Over 90% of the donors to my campaign are San Leandro residents.

As a candidate for mayor I look to the people of San Leandro as my supporters and as Mayor my decisions will be based solely on the best interest of the people of San Leandro.

  • A New Culture of Collaboration at City Hall

A key problem facing San Leandro today is the lack of shared goals and objectives among the mayor, city council, and staff.

We must end the isolation of City Hall from the community. An important part of the job of mayor is to inspire and empower the community to achieve more. I will take a collaborative approach to governing and engage the public in open and honest dialogue.
