Smart Voter Full Biography for Thomas M.D. "Tom" Warschauer

Personal Information Thomas has lived in Clairemeont/Bay Park for 33 years with his wife, Carol. They raised their two kids here. He was a nuclear missile submariner for six years before beginning his academic career. He earned his Ph.D. in Finance at the University of Colorado. Warschauer said, "I came to California because it was a beautiful place filled with opportunity and freedom. I am running to help California regain those values."

Academic Experience Professor Warschauer has been employed at San Diego State University as a Professor of Finance since he arrived here. He demonstrated his leadership as Associate Dean of SDSU's nationally recognized College of Business Administration. Professor Warschauer built the nation's first, very successful, bachelors' and masters' degree programs in Personal Financial Planning. "Many colleges have imitated what we have accomplished here at SDSU," he said.

Business Experience During his non-academic work-life Warschauer has been President of both a investment real estate firm, a stock brokerage firm and been an SEC Registered Investment Adviser. He has been a Certified Financial PlannerTM licensee since 1976. He has always been an advocate for consumer rights in the financial arena. During his academic career he testified before Congress on social security and consulted with many of the nation's largest financial institutions helping them improve customer service and implement personal financial planning advice. Warschauer indicated "I am certain I can merge my concern for California's families with my knowledge of finance to help solve the problems we face."

Statewide/National Activity Warschauer was elected to serve on the statewide CSU Academic Senate, the CSU Admissions Advisory and Financial Aid Advisory Committees, and the CSU Commission on the Extended University. He was the first president of the nationally acclaimed Academy of Financial Services and was a member of the national Board of Examiners of the Certified Financial Planning Board of Standards.

Awards In 2000 Warschauer received a "Monty" Award for service to SDSU and last fall the San Diego Financial Planning Association award him the "Heart of Financial Planning" award.
