Fixing Our Schools

By Steve Torno

Candidate for State Senator; District 6; Libertarian Party

This information is provided by the candidate
Want better schools? Why don't we compete for the brightest college students?
My plan for fixing education in the State of California is simple. Most of the top entering College Freshmen choose Engineering and Economics as their majors. Can you guess why? That's right they pay more once you graduate than the other majors. Students entering college with an Education major actually score below average on their entrance exams when compared with all entering college students. If we make the base salary of teachers equal, or competitive with those of Engineering and Economics, we could then expect more of our brightest young minds to enter teaching as a profession. Furthermore, I support a dollar for dollar tax deduction for money spent on education K through Grad School. By encouraging private investment with these deductions, I would like to restore the UC system to the days when the education was free. We cannot continue to simply throw money at the problem and hope it gets better. Washington DC spends the most, about $15,000 per student and has one of the worst academic ratings in the United States.
