Keeping State colleges and universities accessible and well funded

By Rafael Garcia-Rangel

Candidate for Member of the State Assembly; District 47; Democratic Party

This information is provided by the candidate
From the personal intellectual growth of the individual student to the growth of our civilization's body of knowledge, higher education has contributed to our society in so many ways and this should not be hindered in any way. We do not want eligible California residents in this global economy to forego a college education due to financial or administrative shortcomings. Advances in science and medicine at our research universities must also continue.
We must keep our public colleges and universities affordable and accessible to all Californians by providing adequate funding for higher education. To do this, I will support a proposal to raise the severance fee on oil extracted from California to 12.5 percent, with proceeds going to higher education. Without raising the price of gas, which is actually based on the world market rate for a barrel of oil, California will raise over $2 Billion per year for our Colleges and Universities. Our oil companies aren't going anywhere and if you care to make oil drilliing and exploration less lucrative in California you should also sign on.

Now, more than ever before, adults are going back to school as a result of the slowed economy. We need to fuel these aspiring adults with the support they need to accomplish their academic and career goals and not discourage them with reduced course offerings, reduced admission enrollment and a hike in student fees. Administrative positions have increased over the years and so have their pay. We need to focus on reducing administrative costs and not increasing student fees.
